Rickie Fowler, Shane Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama share Phoenix Open lead
Bubba Watson hits out of a bunker on the 12th hole during the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament at TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016.
‘I don’t like it, ‘ said Watson on Wednesday after the pro-am ahead of the tournament.
“After making two bogeys in a row I was just hitting it to the middle of the green and trying to roll it down”, Lowry said, but he knew when he struck the putt it had a chance.
The bobcat sauntered between the first and second holes Friday afternoon, seemingly comfortable not far from the fans who packed the grounds on TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course. The crowd broke the Friday record of 123,674 set in 2014 and was the 10th-largest figure for any day in tournament history.
Lee, 25, has won once on the tour, claiming the Greenbrier Classic title in West Virginia last July.
“Sometimes you get the right bounces, and around here, I’ve played well”, he said.
At the same time Watson reiterated his dislike for the course, saying, “I’m not a fan of the golf course. How would you not be here to support the tournament that brings out the most people of any tournament in the world?”
Fowler carded a 68 to advance to nine under, striking four birdies and a solitary bogey. “The wind was kind of blowing from an awkward position”.
Japan’s Matsuyama, who also teed off on 10, had five birdies in his first nine holes, including three in a row from the 15th through the 17th. Lowry said he plays well on firm greens, which was the case Friday. “Cost me a little bit, but other than that, nice way to get off to a good start”.
USA’s Bradley Keegan would have been in tied-fourth on five-under, but he was hit with a two-stroke penalty after taking to the course with 15 clubs instead of the permitted 14. My wife says that, too, when I go home.
“Really, the very first day I picked up a PXG driver – 3-wood, irons – the ball is going where I want it to go”. Former Husky Nick Taylor (69) is tied for 61st at 1 under.
They were treated to not one but two holes-in-one.
