New Zika Guidelines Advise Pregnant Women To Avoid Sex
In newly issued guidelines about sexual transmission of the disease. official said men who have traveled to Zika-infected countries should use condoms or abstain from sex for the duration of their partner’s pregnancy.
As for men with partners who are not pregnant, they should “consider” abstinence or condom use if they visit or live in a Zika-affected country.
The CDC also updated its interim guidance for health care providers in the USA who are caring for pregnant women and women of reproductive age with possible Zika virus exposure.
Scientists at the Fiocruz institute say they’re trying to determine if the body fluids can spread Zika to new patients.
In addition, the risk of infection “depends on how long and how much a person has been exposed to infected mosquitoes, and the steps taken to prevent mosquito bites while in an affected area”.
In its statement, the UNFPA said women and girls should be able to make decisions about family planning and to protect their babies and themselves if they decide to become pregnant.
But since October, Brazil has reported 404 confirmed cases of microcephaly where the baby’s head is abnormally small – up from 147 in 2014 – plus 3,670 suspected cases.
