Top two set for showdown in Premier League
Leicester City’s unlikely assault on a first Premier League title gathered momentum with a ruthless 3-1 demolition of Manchester City helping them storm five points clear at the top on Saturday.
David Silva shot wide at the other end, but Leicester were soon threatening again at the other end as Vardy beat Nicolas Otamendi for pace before his low cross was stabbed wide by strike partner Shinji Okazaki.
As Draper noted earlier this week, teams who aren’t United, Chelsea, Arsenal, or Manchester City don’t win the Premier League.
They face a hard test on Saturday when they take on a Leicester side still defying the odds, with Claudio Ranieri’s men top of the table after losing just twice this term.
City’s recovery was short-lived, however, and Huth punished them for yet more slack defending from Leicester’s next attack, a 60th-minute corner won after good work and dogged persistence by Vardy. “It is important for us to recover our players and I am continuing to not give up because we got an unexpected defeat but we must continue”.
The Italian is refusing to listen to the betting companies, as it was they who predicted him to be one of the first managerial casualties of the season when he replaced Nigel Pearson as Foxes boss in the summer. “My mind goes over seven days and the next game against Arsenal, a tough match with fantastic players”.
With 14 games left they will travel to the Etihad Stadium three points clear of a chasing pack, led by Manchester City but missing some usual suspects.
The Foxes were three up in 25 minutes and in a sight that would become increasingly familiar it was goals from Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez that did the damage. “Now we have to concentrate match by match, step by step”.
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini looks on at his team’s poor performance against Leicester City, February 6, 2016.
“It’s a insane Premier League”, said Ranieri in post-match commentary, echoing the thoughts of almost every follower of England’s top-flight.
“I am sorry because we know it’s a insane league and we have to try in this insane league and there are some big teams who have to win”, Ranieri said.
City was ragged and things could have got considerably worse as they were pulled apart continually in the opening 20 minutes.
The Algeria worldwide added: “Even us, we didn’t expect to win here 3-1 so we are just going to keep dreaming and we will see what can happen”.
