Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton wins AP NFL MVP award
Cam Newton accounted for 45 touchdowns this season for the NFC champion Panthers.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was named the 2015 NFL MVP at tonight’s NFL Honors. The brand also has golfer Jordan Spieth, who won two majors last season and was named PGA Player of the Year.
Newton’s regular season – voting was done before the playoffs – included 35 passing touchdowns despite losing top receiver Kelvin Benjamin for the season due to a torn ACL, 10 rushing touchdowns and, of course, 15 wins in 16 tries as the Panthers raced to the top record in the league.
The award was presented Saturday night during NFL Honors. Newton dominated the vote, getting 48 of 50 votes.
To well-informed football fans, waiting until today to announce who the NFL’s MVP for the regular season was just a formality. His 636 yards on the ground easily led all QBs, and the 10 touchdowns rushing were more than All-Pro running back Doug Martin of Tampa Bay scored. Whether it was the fun he was having on the field or his infectious personality, Newton grew as a leader and the rest of his team followed him wherever he went.
He now has the chance to win his first Super Bowl, with tomorrow’s matchup against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, looming. It’s been a season full of accomplishments for Newton and on Saturday, he was rewarded for one of the best seasons by a quarterback ever.
