Jeb Bush and Donald Trump Have a Heated Exchange Over Eminent Domain
‘Without eminent domain, you don’t have roads, highways, schools or anything. eminent domain is an absolutely necessity for a country, ‘ Trump said. “That is not public objective”. At the Republican debate on Saturday, when Jeb Bush broke into one of Trump’s answers, Trump turned around and shushed Bush. What Donald Trump did was use eminent domain to try to take the property of an elderly woman on the strip in Atlantic City.
Businessman and Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump had a rough time in the eighth (yup, another) GOP primary debate in New Hampshire on Saturday. “Let me talk. Quiet”. Mr. Trump, you have said, quote, “I love eminent domain” which is the seizure of private property for the sake of the greater good theoretically. During the subject of eminent domain, Trump was resoundingly booed by the audience as he defended the use of eminent domain proceedings.
“The Keystone pipeline – without eminent domain, you wouldn’t go 10 feet, okay?”
When Trump got his formal allotment of time, he again mocked Bush for supposedly trying to look like a “tough guy”.
The audience-which has been particularly rowdy this evening-booed the hell out of Trump for the infantilizing move.
BUSH: “The difference – the difference between eminent domain for public goal – as Donald said, roads and infrastructure, pipelines and all that – that’s for public objective”, said Bush.
“And what a lot of people don’t know, because they’ll all say, Oh, they’re going to take their property”.
Ted Cruz is trumpeting his Iowa caucus victory in his closing statement in the New Hampshire presidential debate. And by the way, let me just tell you, we needed tickets, you can’t get them.
Trump repeatedly pointed to the Keystone XL pipeline as an example of something that conservatives support, but which wouldn’t be possible without eminent domain.
“Eminent domain is an absolute necessity for a country, for our country”, said Trump.
He also claimed-very dubiously-that eminent domain is even good for its victims, because in some cases they are given more money than their property is worth.
He then blamed the fact that the crowd booed him on not needing their money.
As the audience booed Trump continued, “That’s all of his donors and special interests out there”.
“I think I might vote for Jeb”, Kevin Malvey, a radio DJ, told AFP after attending Concord’s town hall.
