3 people likely aboard 2 planes that collided
Two small planes collided in midair Friday and plunged into the ocean off of Los Angeles harbor.
Officials said debris was recovered, including a log book from one of the pilots, which indicated that two men, ages 61 and 81, were in one of the aircraft together.
Two men and a woman went missing after two small planes collided mid-air and crashed into the ocean on Friday.
Another plane, believed to be piloted by a 72-year-old woman, was expected to arrive at Torrance airport earlier Friday but never showed, Williams said. The harbor entrance was closed to traffic while the search continued.
Firefighters responded to a report of a plane down in the water off San Pedro on February 5, 2016. This area is well-frequented by fight students and at the time the planes collided, the skies were completely clear.
But the active search for survivors was suspended at 9:15 a.m., according to a U.S. Coast Guard statement.
One of the planes was a Beechcraft 35 and the other was described as an aerobatic stunt plane, according to Q13 Fox. However no sign of the three missing people or the second aircraft was found. “It’s cold water, but it is possible to survive in those temperatures”.
That led investigators to believe at first that there had been a collision, Anderson said. Three to four planes are in the air on any given day.
“So with the amount of activity, actually, I think we’ve been fortunate”, Garnett told Fox.
In 2001, four people died when two Cessna airplanes carrying instructors and students collided 1,000 feet above the harbor.
FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said the agency had been alerted about an aircraft down, but had no information about the type of plane or the number of people on board. “We are really diligent”.
