At least six people involved in Dublin hotel murder
Irish police say unidentified gunmen have opened fire on boxing fans at a Dublin hotel, killing one man and wounding two others.
As said by the officials, at the time of attack the hotel lobby was full of boxing fans who had gathered for the ceremonies for two weekend boxing competitions.
One man was killed, 39-year-old David Byrne, with two other men seriously injured in the attack.
Two other men were removed to The Mater and Beaumont hospitals with gunshot wounds.
Bystanders in the lobby of the Regency Hotel on the Swords Road, around two miles north of Dublin city centre, described cowering for their lives as the attackers fired multiple rounds at the men.
“At that point, the gunman leaned over the reception desk, looked down at me-pointing the gun at me…”
Police are hunting the six-strong gang, which fled in a silver van that was later found burned out.
“The men were armed with automatic weapons. In that regard it was described as a SWAT uniform with metal helmets, similar to what you see on crime dramas”.
As gunshots ring out a little girl can be heard on the video crying “Daddy, what’s going on?”
I thought it was an ISIS attack.
It’s thought two gunmen stormed the hotel while a third armed man paced outside and fired a shot as he warned an innocent man to “get out of the f****** way”, the Irish Independent reported.
A number of gangland figures were anticipated to have been planning to attend the weight-in.
Mr McAnena said: “I was shouting even before he came over, “don’t shoot, don’t shoot”…”
“I actually saw the sheer fear that will live with them for a long, long time”, he said of those who witnessed the shooting.
He said some people dived for cover when they realised what was happening.
The gunmen could hardly have chosen a more public event with dozens of cameras and scores of members of the media in attendance the day before a European lightweight boxing showdown that was to be held at Dublin’s national stadium (that has now been canceled).
“The man I saw shot is the man that is now dead…”
Police have not determined a motive, but Irish Prime Minister Edna Kenny told reporters the attack appeared to be part of a turf war between rival criminal gangs in Dublin.
Mr Christle said one of the attackers was dressed as a woman and aged in his early 20s, a detail later confirmed by police.
In 2014, Jamie Kavanagh’s father Gerard Kavanagh, a known gang enforcer, was shot and killed in a bar in Dublin, and the shooting of former boxer Jamie Moore was tied to the gang wars as well. “His face was completely distorted, is what I can say about it”.
According to a tweet on Friday afternoon from Box Nation: “following today’s incident at the Dublin weigh-in, tomorrow’s show from the National Stadium has been cancelled”.
