The big moments at this year’s SAG Awards
Supporting acting awards at the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards went to Idris Elba and Alicia Vikander, where Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” again won the award for Best Ensemble in a Television Comedy Series.
The SAG Awards, held at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and broadcast live on TNT and TBS, came amid uproar over a second straight year of all-white Academy Awards acting nominees.
Doing the double, Idris Elba took home two gongs from Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards on a night when diversity was THE big victor.
Elba won best actor in a TV series for the BBC cop drama Luther and best supporting actor for Beasts Of No Nation – a film ignored by Oscar voters.
The SAG Awards produced a very diverse show with a range of actors and actresses up for gongs. My job as an actor is to create a human being to the best of my ability.
Several black performers were honoured including Queen Latifah who was named Best Actress in a TV Movie or Mini-Series for “Bessie“.
In the above video, Elba recognizes the weight of Beasts of No Nation, which was set in war-torn West Africa. Over the years he’s had numerous nominations so winning he said was very special: “We all stand on the shoulders of giants, so I want thank all those actors from the past who have inspired me and all those actors who are in this room“. Delighted by the win, she said in her speech, “Omigod, I am in shock right how”.
Discussing backstage how cinema can match the diversity seen on television, she said: “The public has to continue to demand that, we are in a capitalist society so hopefully supply and demand will kick in”.
Brie Larson made it two major award wins out of two as she won the Best Actress award for her performance in Room.
Best actor in a TV comedy went to Jeffery Tambor for the acclaimed Amazon series ‘Transparent‘. The two joined forces to present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Carol Burnett (and knocked DiCaprio down a few pegs with a hilarious bit at his expense).
“This is not only for survivors of this horrific situation, this is really for the disenfranchised”, Spotlight actor Michael Keaton said.
The female prison series Orange is the New Black won the ensemble award for a comedy series, and its star Uzo Aduba for best comedy actress in a television series.
