Trump Hits Cruz for ‘Fraud,’ Calls for Do-Over in Iowa
Trump predicted he would win in New Hampshire-a state that he said probably suits him better-but said coming in second wouldn’t be “horrible” because he is “competing against a lot of talented people that have been politicians all of their lives”.
In attacks posted on his official Twitter account Wednesday, February 3, Trump said “either a new election should take place or Cruz results nullified” in the Iowa contest. “It was a way to get more votes and I think he probably did get more votes”. “Bad!”, Trump said. There was no immediate mresponse from Cruz.
He criticized Cruz for putting out a statement saying that a fellow candidate, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, was quitting the race, and accused Cruz of lying to thousands of voters about Trump’s policies.
He went on to call for action to remedy what he saw as inappropriate action.
The Cruz campaign issued an apology to Carson on Tuesday, saying it should have clarified that Carson was, in fact, continuing his bid for the Republican nomination. “This year there is ‘no mo.’ The race has reset after Iowa, and the New Hampshire campaign over the next week will have a life of its own”.
“I came in second, and nobody said it was a victory”.
“The State of Iowa should disqualify Ted Cruz from the most recent election on the basis that he cheated – a total fraud”, Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning. “He also said I was totally in favor of Obamacare and it’s the exact opposite”.
“For a guy known for making bombastic, off-the-wall speeches, Donald Trump’s Iowa speech was something genuinely new: a conventional concession speech”, Timothy B. Lee wrote on Vox.
Cruz called the billionaire’s “Trumper-tantrum” hysterical. “I think we had a very good result yesterday”.
Earlier on Wednesday, Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler told CNN the Texas senator had apologised personally to Carson.
Cruz beat Trump by several percentage points after most polls put Trump slightly ahead.
Trump was still smarting over Iowa. Donald Trump was coasting in the Iowa polls even after ditching the state’s final debate as the latest maneuver in his petty one-sided feud with Fox’s Megyn Kelly.
