Damage being assessed after tornado in eastern Mississippi
The threat of severe storms, high wind with possible hail and tornadoes is at its greatest between 8 p.m. Tuesday and midnight Wednesday.
Local officials are reporting homes damaged and minor injuries after a suspected tornado struck near the rural city of Aliceville in western Alabama.
The Pickens County tornado destroyed 13 homes, 10 of which were mobile homes, and damaged three other mobile homes, according to the NWS.
A mobile home was picked up and dropped, leaving it cracked in half near one street, recounts the article.
The area around Alabama and MS, where thousands of tornadoes hit. He also said that the storm survey crews are also evaluating damage in Fayette and Lamar counties.
At least one “large and extremely risky tornado” developed in Pickens County, Alabama, the National Weather Service said. Residents reported some debris and trees down following the tornado that touched down there earlier in the day on Tuesday.
The tornado warning for Tuscaloosa county has been cancelled.
Crockett County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Roy Mosier says two tractor-trailers overturned on US 412, forcing a section of the highway to close for hours.
The National Weather Service warns of a slight risk of severe weather, with the main threats being tornadoes, damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning.
An administrative building was damaged and several power lines were down at the federal prison in Aliceville, Assistant Police Chief Tony Thrasher told NBC News. Despite all the damage, there are no reports of injuries. Trees and power lines were knocked down and many are without power.
First Baptist Church Collinsville had structural damage and there was damage reported at West Lauderdale High School as well.
