Crane that collapsed, killing 1, is removed from NYC street
The incident took place when workers were attempting to lower the crawler crane, as it was swaying in high winds, into a secure position. The crane landed across an intersection and stretched much of a block in the Tribeca neighbourhood, about 10 blocks north of the World Trade Center. Officials said the collapse’s toll was lessened because construction workers were guiding people away from the street as the crane was being prepared to be lowered.

An Easton man who was seriously injured on Friday in New York City after a construction crane collapsed on his vehicle has been released from the hospital, according to hospital officials.
He said: “Thank God we didn’t have more injuries and lose more people”. They were reviewing data from a computer aboard the crane, which had been inspected by the city as recently as Thursday, and were seeking to pinpoint the wind speed at the time of the accident.
Robert Harold heard a crashing sound as the rig fell right outside his office window at the Legal Aid Society. Harold said he also saw a person lying motionless on the street.

The downed crane fell at 8.24am, crushing cars and trapping several people inside their vehicles. After the collapse, the crane’s big cab lay upside-down in the snow with its tank-like tracks pointed at the sky.
The employee at Bay Crane said he was a manager but would not give his name when reached by The Associated Press.
He told Fox 5 News that he and several colleagues ran out of the building and started searching cars for trapped individuals.
New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer issued a statement on Friday criticizing the buildings department for not implementing certain safety improvements. The following road closures were in effect: Northbound Greenwich Street from Battery Place, southbound West Broadway from Canal Street and both directions Worth Street from Church Street to Hudson Street.
