Rafa Benitez set to replace Gary Neville at Valencia — SkySports
Neville was already feeling the heat after failing to win a league game in eight attempts since he took over on 2nd December – but this week’s 7-0 loss to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final has supposedly put him on the brink of an early exit.
The shambolic display at Camp Nou provoked the ire of Valencia’s supporters, but Neville has embraced their passionate anger and hopes his side can produce something worthy of the fans’ dedication at Real Betis on Sunday.
Valencia’s British coach Gary Neville speaks during a press conference at the Sports City in Valencia on February 2, 2015.
They included calling Wenger’s transfer policy “naive and arrogant” and claiming the club’s stars did very little preparation for big matches.
“I don’t believe we are getting the results that reflect the improvement in this team”, Neville said.
“They have great professionals on the staff of Valencia and a good team”. But I believe in the work I’m doing. “It’s the results that matters now”, he said. “That’s hard to explain, but I’ve seen this before in football many times”.
“Everyone suffers. It’s just not going for us at the moment”.
Neville is yet to win any of his nine league matches since taking his first manager’s job and must now wait on the decision of club chairwoman Layhoon Chan and sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch to see if he still has a job in the coming days. We have to turn it round quickly, I understand that. “I can’t believe that we will keep missing chances and that every time there is a chance the other team will take it”.
His Valencia record reads six defeats, six draws and four wins in all competitions, although he has failed to win a single game in the league. “We shouldn’t get involved in things we aren’t supposed to”.
“We all want to stay in our jobs”, he said on his club’s official website.
