National Basketball Association champions Warriors attend reception at White House
U.S. President Barack Obama hosted the National Basketball Association champion Golden State Warriors at The White House on Thursday, and the POTUS pulled out his familiar comedy routine on Stephen Curry and company.
The Warriors beat Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in last year’s National Basketball Association finals and are off to a historically strong start in their quest to repeat, with a 45-4 record so far this season.
“Our general manager, Bob Myers … mentioned to me that you’re going to be a free agent at the end of this year”, Kerr said to President Obama, according to a transcript provided by the White House.
Stephen, 27, and Ayesha Curry’s superstar daughter Riley, 3, has stolen the hearts of pretty much everyone in the country – and that includes President Barack Obama. ‘For those of you that watched the game against the Wizards last night, he was – to use a slang phrase – he was “clowning”‘.
Obama then raised his fists and jumped up and down in a circle to demonstrate, mimicking what Curry did as he scored 51 points and a career-tying 11 three-pointers against Washington Wizzards.
During the Warriors’ visit to the president’s home to be honored for their 2015 NBA Championship, Kerr brought up the possibility of adding the soon-to-be outgoing president to the roster.
“I think we gotta play to who we are and be who we are, and after this is over really look and evaluate where we need to get better, where we need to improve”. “Great shooting, great passing, a small-ball “nuclear lineup” – it’s nearly not fair”.
“They play not just well, they play well together”. “So we’re pretty lucky today because we’ve got one of those players in the house – Steve Kerr, from the 1995-’96 Chicago Bulls”.
Obama also recognized the Warriors’ efforts off the court.
‘Consider this a symbol of an offer that’s coming, ‘ Kerr said as he presented Obama with the jersey and the president demonstrated his shooting form.
Obama also waded into the ongoing debate over whether the Warriors of 2014-2015 are the greatest National Basketball Association team of all time. “So we don’t know if you have anything lined up yet, but …”
Obama, who has made curbing gun violence a priority, noted in his remarks in the East Room of the White House that the Warriors “had players take a stand” against it, prompting applause from the crowd.
