Knicks fire coach Derek Fisher; Rambis interim head coach
Knicks president Phil Jackson hired Fisher following Fisher’s retirement from the National Basketball Association as a player after Steve Kerr agreed to coach the Golden State Warriors instead of NY.
On Monday, the Knicks announced that Fisher had been fired after allowing the team to stall following a decent start to the year. That is a winning percentage of just 29.4, ranking him among the worst coaches in Knicks history.
The struggling Knicks lost nine of their last 10, falling to 12th in the Eastern Conference. Kurt Rambis will take over as the interim head coach starting immediately.
The Knicks, 23-31, had dropped 11 of their last 14 games and were clearly in need of a change.
We will see how the Knicks respond as a team, but it seems like an unfair move to Fisher at this time – we are not even at the all-star break.
Kurt Rambis will serve as interim coach.
While there have been calls for Fisher’s job by fans and media pundits, very few expected NY to make this move mid-season. He helped lead the Lakers to a 24-13 record during his tenure, but saw the team come up short in the 1999 NBA Playoffs.
