Snyder aide: No reason to brief Gov. Snyder on Legionnaires’
Working to protect the drinking water in Michigan, Ohio, and other states, Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) co-sponsored an amendment he helped to negotiate with Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) created to address lead exposure to drinking systems around the country.
“Let’s make sure we take care of the people of Flint, and give every child a chance to live up to her God-given potential”, Clinton said.
The results, which the group shared with NBC News, show that the water coming out of the kitchen faucet, where a filter was installed after state officials finally confirmed the lead crisis this fall, didn’t contain any of the heavy metal.
Clinton drew the nation’s attention to Flint at a Democratic debate, using her closing comments to raise the issue unprompted and decrying how the situation would never be permitted in a wealthy neighborhood. Snyder announced the firing Friday of Liane Shekter Smith, the former chief of the DEQ’s Office of Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance who had previously been reassigned and later suspended; the department continues to review the actions of a second employee who was suspended last month.
“The fact that they’re looking at this as a public relations problem rather than a public health problem says a lot”, said Kildee after his testimony.
Snyder has been a big proponent of placing financially troubled cities under the management of a state appointed overseer, as he did in helping Detroit get through bankruptcy.
Snyder says one reason he changed the agency’s leadership is because he “wasn’t getting the information that I should have”. “All people, including immigrants, should have access to clean and drinkable water, regardless of immigration status or lack of identification”.
Sanders has gone further, calling for the resignation of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, a two-term Republican, who many blame for a slow response or even a cover-up of the problem.
Clinton traveled to Flint from Manchester on Sunday morning, just two days before the primary election, in an effort to bring attention to the water crisis there.
“I will fight for you in Flint no matter how long it takes”, she said.
“We need you, God, in a miraculous way”, he prayed. “If Michigan won’t do it, there have to be ways that we can begin to move, and then make them pay for it and hold them accountable”. She also said her plans were more fiscally responsible.
U.S. Senate Republicans have faced criticism after refusing a Democratic bid to send hundreds of millions of dollars in emergency aid to Flint, Michigan.
“I want you to know that this has to be a national priority not just for today or tomorrow”, Clinton said from the pulpit of the House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church.
Snyder will be in Lansing presenting his formal fiscal year 2017 budget recommendations – including $30 million to cover water bill credits for residents dating back to April 2014 – on the same day the Steering and Policy committee meets in Washington, D.C.
Shortly before flying to Flint, Michigan, to see the damage from the lead water crisis there, Hillary Clinton told CNN Sunday that there is “no acceptable” amount of lead in water for kids.
