Larry David Isolates Voters as Bernie Sanders on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. “Enough is enough! We all need to unite if we’re going to get through this!”
“Sounds like socialism to me”, remarked David. It’s not just amusing because of David’s impression, or Cecily Strong’s fantastic take on Susie Essman as a Sanders adviser, or Jay Pharoah as a spot-on JB Smoove; what makes it one of the best SNL bits in recent memory is how faithfully it transports the Curb formula to the Iowa caucus.
It was an especially natural fit with Larry David hosting, as he’s already performed a dead-on impression of Sanders several times already this season.
Who do American Jews more identify with: The idealist who would hide his Jewishness; or the realist – and survivor – who knows his Jewishness will inevitably out?
But the night’s musical moment came in the form of a man named Russ. Larry David’s Russ gets an idea stuck in his head and runs with it, even if it goes against the everything he’s doing.
Earlier in the show, David revived his Sanders impersonation – and his own “Curb Your Enthusiasm” character – in the pretaped spoof “Bern Your Enthusiasm”.
The clip was perfectly executed as it played out like an episode of David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, only with Sanders at the Iowa caucus.
“I am Bernie Sanderswitski”, the Democratic presidential hopeful says. Thanks to “SNL”, more people heard Sanders is a “democratic socialist”- and for some that’s enough reason to vote against him.
“I am Bernie Sanderswitsky, but we are going to change it when we get to America, so it doesn’t sound quite so Jewish”, Sanders explained.
“Yeah, that’ll trick ’em”, David jokes. Sanders’ Twitter page avatar was switched to an image of David impersonating him. They’re giving viewers what they want right now, and that is very good comedy despite the frequent criticisms that the show’s just not that amusing anymore.
