Warriors visit White House, get roasted by the president
Obama told a lot of jokes, but his best one involved his beloved 1995-96 Chicago Bulls (he’s from Chicago), whose 72-10 regular-season record is the best in National Basketball Association history and a mark the Warriors are trying to take down this season (they’re now 45-4). Kerr thanked the president, but also complimented him on his use of slang. You defied the cynics, you accomplished big things, you racked up a great record, and you don’t get enough credit.
Obama recognized guard Stephen Curry, forward Draymond Green, power forward Harrison Barnes, center Andrew Bogut, guard Andre Iguodala and forward David Lee for their skills, and for what they’ve done for the Bay Area community, including mentoring young men through the president’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative. Obama described some of Curry’s antics on the court as “clowning”, particularly during the night’s previous game against Washington when Curry scored 51 points in the win.
“If he’s down, I’m down”, Curry said.
The president also left the Warriors’ other sharpshooter Klay Thompson red-faced with a couple of zingers, although ended with praise at Curry’s expense.
Obama said he was disappointed not to see Riley Curry, the young daughter of the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player who charmed the cameras during her father’s post-game news conferences during last June’s NBA Finals. They play as a team the way basketball is supposed to be played, and it’s handsome to watch when they’re working on all cylinders.
“They’re the kind of people you want representing a city, representing the National Basketball Association, and the kind of people that you want our kids to be rooting for”, he said.
“Maybe you’ll break that Bulls record.”
‘Consider this a symbol of an offer that’s coming, ‘ Kerr said as he presented Obama with the jersey and the president demonstrated his shooting form.
Obama wasn’t able to keep to the theme of the Warriors the entire speech, making sure to fit in a comment about his hometown team.
Kerr noted that Obama would be a free agent at the end of the year. The president said it; I can’t argue with the president.
