Shelton, Lambert Divorce Records Sealed, Possibly Illegally
Blake Shelton returned to the concert stage Friday night in Wisconsin for the first time since announcing his divorce from Miranda Lambert. The judge must make the sealing order public and is only allowed to seal the pieces of the case that need to be kept confidential.
Former legislator Aaron Stiles says he wrote the law, which was passed last year by the Legislature, after seeing cases in which a judge sealed divorce records to protect their friends.
“Oh, yeah, they’re definitely not following the law on it. I can’t imagine a scenario where you would ever seal an entire civil or divorce case.”
“Come on, who’s in charge here?” “…The average citizen, they don’t get their cases sealed”. Thus far, only the online docket has been made public. That order in the Shelton-Lambert divorce isn’t public. Shelton filed a petition July 6 in Pottawatomie County for a divorce, and the decree officially dissolving the marriage was filed July 20.
“This is not the future we envisioned”, Shelton and Lambert said when news of the divorce broke. “Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter”.
