Susan Sarandon attacks Hillary Clinton on gay rights
With decades of political experience under her belt, Hillary Clinton finds herself in a familiar position with less than one week to go until the Iowa caucuses – but she insists this time it is different. We propose three additional debates.
It remains unclear if any additional debates will come to pass. The Democratic National Committee has said it will not sanction the debate organized for next week, though it seems unlikely it will ban all three candidates from the remaining two sanctioned debates. Asked whether Mr Obama, who beat Ms Clinton for the Democratic nomination in 2008, had given him advice on how to defeat her, Mr Sanders laughed and said: “No, no”.
Clinton’s camp hasn’t formally responded to Sanders’ proposal, but extending the debate schedule into May would lengthen the primary campaign, a process Clinton still hopes will wrap up in March. The Sanders campaign wants at least three more debates with none coming on a weekend or holiday.
The meeting comes at an important moment for Sanders, as he gears up to battle former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the Iowa caucuses.
“I am delighted to be here with you tonight in Mason City”, he said.
“Sen. Sanders is happy to have more debates but we are not going to schedule them on an ad hoc basis at the whim of the Clinton campaign”, Weaver added in his statement.
However Sanders appeared optimistic following a rare private meeting with Obama.
CLINTON: “Well, I have been very public in saying I would like the DNC to work with all of the campaigns, because that’s what it did when it set up this schedule, and obviously we want to be supportive”.
Sanders has made campaign finance reform a cornerstone of his campaign.
Pete D’Alesandro, who is working for Sanders in Iowa, told MSNBC that they were suspicious of how a corporation might respond to an anti-corporate candidate like Sanders and wanted to be able to verify the results for themselves. If not, I think we’ll be struggling.
Sanders, who calls himself a Democratic socialist, is calling for a revolution against the “billionaire class”. Sanders has significant momentum. Sen.
Obama and his aides have regular contact with Clinton – his former secretary of state – and her staff, which includes former Obama White House staffers.
The Clinton campaign is aiming to put Sanders in a corner: Already leading in New Hampshire, the Vermont senator has little to gain from another face-to-face contest with Clinton.
