Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ Stays On Top
This image released by DreamWorks Animation shows characters Po, voiced by Jack Black, left, and his long-lost panda father Li, voiced by Bryan Cranston, in a scene from “Kung Fu Panda 3”.
With a final total looking to be between $920-925 million, The Force Awakens will land in eleventh place on the all-time biggest domestic earners and that is adjusted for inflation.
Neither the Coen brothers nor zombies in Jane Austen’s England could claw their way to the top of the box office as 20th Century Fox’s “Kung Fu Panda 3” kept its hold on moviegoers.
Also of note: After bouncing between directors, stars and studios, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”, financed by Cross Creek Pictures for $28 million and distributed by Sony, became the latest genre mash-up to flop, taking in $5.2 million. After opening January 29 with a solid $41 million domestically, the movie finished just below industry expectations of $22 million in its second weekend. But that is the only silver lining for the worst wide opening numbers the Coens have ever had, which may not get any better thanks to a C- audience score on CinemaScore surveys.
But “Hail Caesar” is not the only new release which underperformed this week as the Super Bowl fever took over the US this Sunday. The cast includes the Golden Globe awardee George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and the actress, model, and singer – Scarlett Johansson.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar-nominated turn in The Revenant took third place. The result was a weekend gross slightly behind what the filmmakers saw over a decade ago with films like The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty which both opened in the $12-13M range at a time when ticket prices were much less. Its global total is up to $325 million, and The Revenant led overseas business with $24 million internationally over the weekend.
Finally, in sixth place, is “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”. It comes in slightly behind other Sparks’ romances, including last year’s The Longest Ride ($13 million) and The Best of Me in 2014 ($10 million). It won’t be catching the $2.7 billion haul of “Avatar”, but also, who cares?
“The Choice” came in No. 5 behind “The Revenant” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. “Dirty Grandpa”, $4.1 million ($4.5 million international).
