Happy Chinese New Year
The Chinese Zodiac comprises 12 animals: mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, Monkey, rooster, dog and pig, all fixed in that order on a 12-year cycle, and each related to one of 12 Terrestrial Branches.
Since Asians have become the fastest-growing demographic, Asian-themed promotional occasions such as Chinese New Year are destined to grow in significance. Millions of Chinese began celebrating the Lunar New Year, which marks the Year of the Monkey on the Chinese zodiac.
Tens of thousands more people are expected to surge into Victoria Harbour on Tuesday to witness a spectacular firework display to cap off a memorable start to the New Year.
After their meal, the students received a Chinese New Year Red Envelope, called hong bao.
In ancient China, people also believed that Monkeys were sensitive to the plague. People do eat long noodles in the first several days of the new year as a symbol of long life.
Vietnamese INTO student Nguyen Thai shared the history of the holiday and why countries other than China, such as his home country of Vietnam, celebrate it. These would include those born in 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, and 2004.
The next Year of the Monkey will be 2028.
South Fork Elementary School joined in on the Chinese New Year’s festivities, they brought in a traditional dragon dance, decorated the gym with red lanterns, children ran around with monkey masks and enjoyed traditional foods.
BEIJING-Chinese are flocking to temples and fairs to pray for good health and fortune on the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday.
Julius Caesar, Leonardo da Vinci, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Ross, Eleanor Roosevelt and Cuba Gooding Jr. are some famous people born in the Year of the Monkey.
