Winter Weather Advisory Issued
Winter Storm Mars, so dubbed by The Weather Channel, could dump 10 or more inches on Boston – less as you head west. New Jersey was expected to get up to 5 inches, while rain that turned to snow snarled the morning commute in eastern Pennsylvania and caused some schools to delay opening. All across the region, travel was not advised due to dangers from snowy roads, but also from the possibility of falling tree limbs and power lines as the winds picked up.
Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker closed state offices in nine counties Monday, and state courts were closed in 10 counties.
Snow fall across much of eastern New England – including Boston – is set to reach at least six inches.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which was crippled by a series of historic storms during Boston’s record-breaking winter previous year, was operating on a normal weekday schedule with winter routes in effect for buses. Light snow showers will still be around Monday night, and even Tuesday morning. Accumulating snow? Models sending mixed messages, but possible.
All departing flights out of Bangor International Airport were running as scheduled early Monday while the Portland Jetport reported a handful of cancellations.
A winter-weather advisory covers all of New Hampshire on the eve of Tuesday’s presidential primary.
There were numerous accidents and spinouts on New England highways due to the heavy snow.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Stearns, Benton, Sherburne and other counties. Sustained winds of 17 miles per hour were reported in Bridgeport Monday morning.
Northeast Georgia and the Upstate will likely see no accumulation in terms of snow but can see anywhere from a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of rain. From D.C. toward the south and east, lows near to a bit above freezing would be less supportive of accumulation, although a heavier burst toward morning could still whiten the ground.
Wednesday: A chance of snow showers, mainly after 3pm.
