Djokovic not underestimating Murray
Andy Murray arrived at the Australian Open fully prepared to become a father before becoming champion. He said post-match that he was, if anything, frustrated with his body more than Murray’s dogged never-say-die attitude.
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Based on records alone, Novak Djokovic would appear to be the favorite in the Australian Open final against Andy Murray.
Today’s final will be Murray’s third in succession at grand slam level, a consistent run that has pushed him up the doubles rankings to No 7 in the world.
It took her 33 majors to win the title – sixth on the list for longest waits that is topped by 2015 U.S. Open champion Flavia Pennetta’s 49.
Will Under Armour have another big moment Sunday at the Australian Open?
In his on-court speech shortly after his victory alongside new partner Bruno Soares, an emotional Jamie told his brother: “Andy you should be in bed, I don’t know why you’re here taking photos”. It also imposes a great obstacle mentally in a way because you need to deliver. And, at 25, there is more time for him to get even better.
Djokovic has been in the situation before.
Brother Jamie is in the doubles final with Bruno Soares against Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek on Saturday, giving the Murray siblings the distinction of being the first brothers to appear in the singles and doubles finals at the same major in the Open era. Murray held two points later. The first grand slam of the year is the only one played on a hard court before the Olympic tennis tournament, which also has this type of surface. “There’s no reason it’s not possible for me to win”. You know, changed the position of the second serves on a few points.
Murray isn’t dwelling on the past, either. “I have a very good shot on Sunday if I play my best tennis”.
“It’s unfortunate… probably the most heartbroken I’ve felt on court, but that’s what it is”, Raonic said following the match.
Undeterred, Murray and Soares hit straight back, capitalising on the second of two break points to serve for the match at 6-5. But for it to be the first time to happen is incredible really. Upset at his sliding performance, Raonic lashed out during the fifth set.
Djokovic wore down Murray in four gruelling sets to win last year’s Melbourne final with the opening two sets lasting two-and-a-half hours.
Although the head-to-head statistics give Djokovic a clear edge, Murray believes he can take heart from the closeness of the encounters he had with his great rival when losing to him a year ago in Miami, Paris and here. Two days later, he beat Nadal for the title in another epic match.
Williams had won the title every previous time she’d reached the final at Melbourne Park, and was overwhelming favorite to continue that streak against Kerber, who joked she was “one leg in the plane to Germany” when she faced match point in her first-round win over Misaki Doi.
