Arrest Threat In Egypt For George Clooney’s Wife Amal Clooney
Alam Clooney, the new bride of George Clooney, was got arrest threat!
George Clooney, 53, and the British human rights lawyer, 36, got married on sept 29, 2014 in a high profile ceremony in Venice. Amal’s full name is Amal Alamuddin Clooney, but she uses the abbreviated version for professional use. The human rights lawyer (London law firm, Doughty Street Chambers), revealed in a interview that she was threatened with arrest in Egypt after she identified flaws in the country’s judicial system that contributed to the conviction of three Al-Jazeera journalists: Mohamed Fahmy, Peter Greste, and Baher Mohamed.
In February 2014, Amal assisted in compiling a report on behalf of the International Bar Association that raised numerous questions regarding the independence of judges and prosecutors in Egyptian judicial system. The report was ignored and the journalists were sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
The British-Lebanese lawyer Mrs Clooney represents Mohamed Fahmy, one the three journalists convicted of terrorism in December 2013. Mr. Fahmy enlisted Mrs. Clooney as his international counsel, along with London-based lawyer Mark Wassouf, after he was dissatisfied with the legal support offered by Al Jazeera. Amal Clooney called on the Government of Egypt to release Mr. Fahmy on medical grounds. She disclosed that he is suffering from Hepatitis C and has lost the full use of his arm after an existing shoulder injury that got worse from sleeping on the prison’s stone floor.
There is however, some hope for the convicts. A judge from an Appeals Court ordered re-trial of the journalists. The two foreign nationals (Mr. Fahmy and Mr. Greste) would be eligible for deportation, even if they are not acquitted while all three would be eligible for a presidential pardon.
The top-flying human rights lawyer is also advising Greece on return of Parthenon marbles to Athens. George Clooney is playing his role of a supportive husband!
