A new video shows hundreds of manatees seeking shelter in Florida’s Three Sisters Springs.
Ivan Vicente, a visitor services specialist with the Fish and Wildlife Service told CNN that the mammals sleep “for over a whole day”.
Manatees can’t tolerate water less than 68 degrees for a prolonged period of time.
The area was reopened Tuesday but is expected to close to water access when the high tide comes again, according to Time.
One of the main reasons that this refuge is so important is because cold water stress can be fatal for manatees, and even those that are at the Three Sisters Springs can lose a considerable amount of weight.
Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Complex posted on Facebook Monday that the large concentration of manatees would cause the spring to close, as not to disturb the animals.
Three Sisters Springs is a natural body of warm water that provides refuge for the endangered Florida manatee.
