Health officials confirm first Zika virus case in Tennessee
When symptoms occur, they are often mild, lasting from several days to a week, and include fever, rash, joint and muscle pain, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and headache.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health announced the first confirmed cases of Zika virus in two residents who recently traveled to countries affected by the ongoing outbreak of the disease. He returned home on February 5 via Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
An worldwide health emergency has been declared by the World Health Organization over the virus, which has spread rapidly in South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. Scientists say the hotter it gets, the better the mosquito that carries Zika virus is at transmitting a variety of risky illnesses.
As the Zika virus spreads, scientists are looking for ways to wipe out the species that carry life-threatening diseases, but the solution isn’t a simple one.
Second, even if it was summer the mosquito most commonly associated with Zika-the Yellow Fever Mosquito-doesn’t exist here. But much remains unknown about Zika. “By adding Zika to the list of diseases eligible for a priority review voucher within the FDA, we can incentivize the development and approval of a vaccine or treatment options to contain the virus and ensure that those effected by Zika can seek care”. “It is hard to determine if any particular germ “causes” GBS”, the CDC says on its website.
That’s because the person would need to either transmit it by being bit by a mosquito in IN, or through sexual contact.
In that study, researchers enrolled 41 patients who developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and 85 people of similar ages who did not develop the disorder.
The primary focus is on pregnant women due to the apparent connection to the birth defect microcephaly.
“The money is important and is urgent”, Burwell told reporters, saying the government needs to ramp up preparedness and mosquito control in Puerto Rico, Florida, Texas and other Southern states while pursuing new research and an accelerated vaccine programme. The CDC advises pregnant women to avoid traveling to areas where Zika virus has been detected, as it is linked to birth defects.
The findings could help guide doctors treating infants with microcephaly, Dr. Rubens Belfort Jr., from the Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, said in a journal news release.
