The Mighty Ducks: Jake Gyllenhaal cried when his parents turned down Mighty
He plays boxer Billy Hope in the newly-released “Southpaw”, a film that he packed on 30 pounds of muscle for.
Southpaw actor Jake Gyllenhaal recently admitted he became a bit emotional when his parents, director Stephen Gyllenhaal and writer Naomi Foner, wouldn’t allow him to accept a lead role in 1992’s The Mighty Ducks.
Since then, Gyllenhaal, who was recently called “perfect” by Kelly Ripa, has taken lessons learned from the painful experience in being honest in his own life and career choices, and emulates his parents whenever possible. “I was like, ‘You guys are insane.'”.
“My parents were like, ‘you’re about to enter junior high school”.
While the fact that he never got to yell “quack! quack! quack!” on camera no doubt haunts him to this day, Gyllenhaal’s career has since recovered from that early setback.
“I definitely remember crying on the kitchen counter”, Gyllenhaal recalled during an appearance on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM radio show. “I promise you, you hate us now, but you’ll thank us later, ‘” Gyllenhaal added. “And I do”. And obviously, the Mighty Ducks didn’t suffer without him as the role went to the very capable Joshua Jackson who made a very good captain for the entire iconic (you heard me) trilogy.
Jake also stars in the acclaimed film with Rachel McAdams, 50 Cent, Forest Whitaker and Naomie Harris. Still, we bet preteen Jake contemplated running away to Hollywood for a while, especially as he sat in math class and listened to the other kids talk about that cool hockey movie that just came out. And not even an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss! Jake Gyllenhaal, for making out with Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain.
