West Ham snatch extra time win over Liverpool in FA Cup
Jurgen Klopp said the door had been “wide open” for Liverpool and hailed his young players’ bravery after they exited the FA Cup as Angelo Ogbonna’s 121st-minute goal sent West Ham through 2-1 victors.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was delighted to have injured trio Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi back in action, despite being disappointed following the Reds’ exit from the FA Cup at the hands of West Ham United.
He believes that his side are good enough to beat anyone in England if they play like that.
“I know it’s only the last 16, but it’s against Liverpool, it’s the last cup game under the lights at Upton Park, and we scored in the last seconds”.
Liverpool had the chances to win the match in ninety minutes and in extra-time, but a wasteful performance from Christian Benteke, who has now gone eleven matches without a goal, highlighted their woes up front once again.
“We have to talk first with Daniel, the doctor and all of the medical staff before I make a decision about this”, he told the club’s official website.
“I am proud of the boys and they left their hearts on the pitch”.
“We were the better team, created chances and played good football, but we didn’t use them”.
“It’s not easy because we were only here to win”.
West Ham United have rejected the suggestion that Dimitri Payet is demanding a wage of £125,000 a week before putting pen to paper on a new contract.
“Unfortunately, it wasn’t a final but we are going step by step”.
It looked an entertaining contest from the outset with both sides enjoying good passages of play, which saw a shot from Philippe Coutinho hit the post and a fine free-kick from Dimitri Payet palmed onto the post. “2-0 in the lead (against Sunderland), manager in hospital, out of the FA Cup, but tomorrow when we get up the sun will shine”, Klopp said. We must do everything we can to keep our best players, and he is our best player.
“We did a lot of things really well”.
West Ham, which is three places above Liverpool in the Premier League standings, had already completed its first league double over the Merseyside club since the 1963/64 season.
Benteke fluffed two glorious chances in extra-time and was made to pay a heavy price when Ogbonna towered above the Liverpool defence to meet an enticing Payet free-kick and guide a thumping header into the far corner. We don’t like our results too much, to be honest, but it is the hard way we have to go and in the end, it can be the right way.
