Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders actually tied among registered Democrats
Voters who are disenchanted with the economy and Washington politicians have responded enthusiastically to candidates who are challenging traditional political norms. “Iowa and New Hampshire ceased being the alpha and omega a long time ago”.
Hillary Clinton conceded to Sanders in a phone call just after 8:30 p.m. Like all of the Republican candidates, Kasich is a conservative and a critic of the Obama administration. “But we’re going to do it the old-fashioned way”.
For the last few weeks the drama on the Republican side has been the identity of the candidate who will finish second – and perhaps become the establishment candidate to take on Mr Trump and Iowa caucuses victor Ted Cruz. But the New Hampshire vote did little to clarify who that candidate might be. Christie pledged earlier Tuesday that his campaign would continue on in SC regardless of what happened in the Granite State.
New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who had dedicated a significant amount of time to New Hampshire, lagged behind in the vote count, casting doubt on the future of his campaign. On the Republican side, with 88 percent of votes counted, Trump had earned 35.1 percent support.
Marco Rubio, a 44-year-old Florida senator, hoped to build on a solid third-place finish in Iowa and brush off a rocky performance in last weekend’s Republican debate. The wife of former President Bill Clinton, Clinton barely won Iowa and now has been trounced in New Hampshire, where young voters liked Sanders’ populist proposals to break up big banks and have the government pay for free college tuition.
Mr Sanders told a raucous victory party that his win sent a message “that the government of our great country belongs to all of the people and not just a handful of wealthy campaign contributors” and their political committees. “As a public servant, it requires me to do all that I can to ensure that every person lives with dignity and security”.
A slight majority of voters said immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally should be allowed to apply for legal status.
It is universally acknowledged that the Presidential Election in the United States affects the entire universe.
The north-eastern state was friendly territory for Mr Sanders, a senator from neighbouring Vermont, and was a must-win for him to stay competitive with Mrs Clinton as the race moves to more diverse states that are seen as more Clinton-friendly.
These are remarkable victories for two outsiders who tapped into voter anger at the two parties’ establishments. But a Reuters/Ipsos poll done Feb 2-5 showed Clinton and Sanders now in a dead heat. Both the NY billionaire and the Democrat who derides the billionaire class appear posed to confirm their consistently large opinion poll leads here with double-digit wins. But it will not be much of a lead.
But in an attempt to downplay the significance of the defeat in the New Hampshire primary, the statement said the nomination “will very likely be won in March, not February”. That’s good news for Mr Cruz and Mr Trump, who will benefit from a fractured establishment field for at least a while longer. A candidate needs to win more than half this number – 1,237 in this case, in order to win the nomination.
