Cal Thomas: Bernie and Hillary’s America
“For [Steinem] to go on Bill Maher’s show and say that women become radicalized with age, but when you’re younger you’re just thinking about where the boys are…”
Renowned feminist journalist Gloria Steinem insinuated some are backing Bernie Sanders for the boys.
The irony was not lost on Maher.
“Albright has a hell of a lot of nerve telling young women who may be very concerned about Clinton’s support for virtually all US wars of recent years that they should vote for her because she’s a woman”, Phyllis Bennis, senior fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, told AlterNet.
Clinton, the former senator, First Lady and Secretary of State, now has an unexpected fight on her hands for the Democrat nomination.
Those who state “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other” as Ms. Albright did are condescending to the next generation.
That’s why when she says she’s not part of the “establishment” because she’d be the first woman president, most people scratch their heads and say, “Huh?” “I think that hasn’t happened”, Sen.
The Democratic contest now turns to Nevada and SC, which are seen as more favorable territory for Clinton. Nationwide, a Quinnipiac University poll released Friday found Clinton clinging to a 2-point lead, 44% to Sanders’ 42%, within the poll’s margin of error. Now, Steinem is apologizing for the comments she made about young female voters via Facebook. Clinton rarely talked about her gender explicitly, and yet the two most resonant and memorable moments of that campaign – when she cried in a diner, and when she spoke soaringly of the 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling – came when she put aside her message: “I’m the same as any man”.
“I think that he gave very kind of simple answers”, she said.
New Republic is calling Steinem’s apology for her comments about young women the beginning of her apology tour.
Now 78, she might have imagined that her audience – at a Clinton rally – would have been familiar with it and responded with laughter, as had so often been the case. Bernie Sanders beating Clinton among women by 8 percentage points. “We’ve seen them in every level of leadership”. I challenge women from all sides to denounce Albright and Clinton for their remarks. Of course I would love to have a woman as president, but not all women should be president, just like not all men should be. “I think he has good ideas but I don’t think he can win in the general election which leaves too much space for the Republicans”.
“On the campaign trail in 2008 and 2012, Obama always told a story about himself and America – where we are and where we are going”, the former aide said. Her gaffe contained a multitude of questionable or incorrect assumptions and insults, starting with heterosexism, something that politically engaged millennial women (who range in age from 18 to 33) know when they hear.
“The ultimate goal is to strike a chord in the soul of the electorate, to make an nearly emotional connection that associates Hillary in their minds with optimism and confidence”, the adviser recommended.
