Delaware officials report case of Zika virus
According to the ODH, a 30-year-old Cuyahoga County woman, who returned from Haiti, was diagnosed with the virus. Officials plan a preparedness exercise before Ohio’s mosquito season begins in May.
“The risk of contracting Zika virus here in IN remains low, but we know that many residents are concerned”, State Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams said in a news release.
According to the CDC, only one in five persons infected with the Zika virus will experience illness, with symptoms such as fever, joint pain, conjunctivitis, rash, headache, and muscle pain.
The diagnosis raises fears for her unborn child’s health, with evidence the disease may cause rare birth defect microcephaly when passed from mother to fetus. CDC also recommends that pregnant women without symptoms of Zika virus disease be offered testing 2 to 12 weeks after returning from areas with ongoing Zika virus transmission.
China has confirmed its first case of the Zika virus in a man who had recently traveled to South America.
The move is aimed at reducing the local mosquito population, which could pass the Zika virus to humans, said Xi Zhiyong, who heads the study.
Officials are not identifying the infected person.
Four cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed in the UK.
The best form of prevention is protection against mosquito bites. Pregnant women are also advised to use a condom or abstain from sex with a partner who has been to any of the regions. “But I would urge any pregnant woman not to be traveling to any of these countries right now”.
She told the Commons Science and Technology Committee: “We have had seven cases, six associated with the current outbreak in South America, in the past three years”.
The Zika virus outbreak – like outbreaks of more unsafe diseases like AIDS and Ebola that preceded it – demonstrates that the United States must be prepared to fight diseases far afield on the humanitarian merits, and to protect Americans at home.
The primary mosquito that transmits Zika virus is found in the tropics and southern US, but it is not established in Ohio.
