SA man accused of kidnap, attempted murder
One of the victims was able to run away and came across some people who were fishing in the area and they were able to comfort and secure her.
The women are said to have befriended their attacker the previous day, en route from Adelaide to Victoria, before camping out in the deserted national park overnight.
The women, one of whom suffered a serious head injury, were taken by helicopter to hospital.
“They effectively found themselves in a situation that has turned out to be scary and physically bad for them“, said Superintendent Blandford.
An Australian man has been charged over the alleged kidnapping and attempted murder of two female backpackers on a beach south of Adelaide. “Looked like she’d been pulled around, dragged around”, he told Seven News.
According to reports, one of the woman managed to escape and could be seen running down the sand dunes naked, bleeding and screaming for help before stumbling across a group of fishermen.
“She ran straight to the auto yelling”, they said. “She opened the back door, jumped straight in and like, ‘get me out of here, get me out of here”.
The worldwide backpackers, aged in their 20s, were discovered with serious injuries near Salt Creek in the Coorong National Park on Tuesday evening.
They had stopped in the area at Salt Creek and were planning to spend the night.
The alleged attacker has appeared via video link at Adelaide Magistrates Court, and a bail application by his lawyers was withdrawn after the judge expressed concern.
“[The alleged victims’] situation was obviously very dire and they were somewhat distressed”.
The site, including a blood spattered vehicle, is now being investigated by Major Crime detectives and Murray Bridge police.
The court suppressed the man’s name and police have not revealed the women’s nationalities to protect their identities.
Sup Int Blandford warned backpackers visiting Australia to remain vigilant when meeting new people.
