Michigan governor plans $360M for Flint, infrastructure
Water from the Flint river had for months corroded lead from the inside of water pipes before flowing into thousands of households across the city. Metro Detroit and Flint churches are working together to deliver cases of water after river water was not treated properly and lead from pipes leached into Flint homes. “The system let them down at every level, and that’s unacceptable”. Though the agency became aware of increased lead levels after a MI emergency manager switched Flint’s water supply from Lake Huron – which supplies water to Detroit – to the Flint River, the agency failed to sound the alarm publicly. Snyder said his recommended amount for pipe replacement is a starting point and could grow once a full analysis is done and all the underground service lines are found in the city of almost 100,000 people.
Weaver said the planned visit and the hearing would help “keep Flint in the spotlight” and maintain pressure on state and federal officials to do more.
It’s unclear exactly where the water replacement will begin in the city, but retired National Guard Brig. “It was determined that having more data was advisable prior to the commitment of a specific optimization method”. He says most chemicals used for that are phosphate-based, which can encourage bacteria.
Cruz’s MI campaign director, Wendy Lynn Day, told Detroit News local reporter Chad Livengood that donating the water both supported the city and shows the “pro-life values of Senator Cruz”.
“Probably melt some snow”, he told the Free Press.
Croft did not elaborate on the type of bacteria that anti-corrosive phosphates could promote.
“Fear, frustration and anger are beginning to consume residents”, Weaver said. She believes the water situation was only allowed to happen because Flint is a poor, majority black city. Last month, as part of the suits, several state agencies were served a subpoena for all documents related to Flint’s drinking water dating back to 2011, including Snyder and his executive staff’s emails.
Technically, the Flint city council made the 7-1 decision to change the source of Flint’s water, but it’s widely understood that the council was in close talks with a number of aides from Governor Snyder’s office about the vote.
“This is a hindsight explanation”, Edwards said.
Croft did not return an email message seeking comment.
U.S. Agriculture officials also announced Wednesday that at least 28 Flint-area schools are eligible for a program providing access to school meals to all students. Notably absent will be Gov. Rick Snyder, who declined an invitation to testify at Wednesday’s hearing.
“But people have to be alert”, he added, apparently suggesting that the residents of Flint were not. Officials have not determined a date for the work to start. He made no reference to bacteria.
“We could find out in two weeks that the water is just fine, and now our big issue is compensating people who have paid water bills for bad water, and compensating people who have lead poisoning”, he said. State officials say the EPA shares blame for not expressing sufficient urgency.
