Snyder wants to expand state police in cities
Last week, the EPA’s acting water chief Joel Beauvais told Congress that MI – under the leadership of Snyder, a Republican – had ignored federal advice to treat Flint’s water for corrosive elements, which are believed to have eroded old lead pipes and contaminated drinking water. They now are based in Detroit, Flint, Pontiac and Saginaw. Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, under fire for his administration’s role in the emergency, has accepted responsibility while also blaming local officials and federal environmental regulators.
As the city water plant was created to begin treating river water, “optimization for lead was addressed and discussed” with an engineering firm and the DEQ, Croft wrote.
Croft says it was chose to wait for more data before choosing a lead-control method. Most chemicals used in this process are phosphate based and phosphate can be a “food” for bacteria.
“But we need your help”. “Increasing evidence shows that there is no safe blood level and that lead disproportionately impacts low-income children”, Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, a key figure in bringing the extent of the crisis to light, said in written testimony. They are asking for help to transport the additional water. Many are driven by health concerns and plunging property values – and the sense that the legal system might right the wrongs that have occurred in Flint. And she’ll never drink tap water again.
“We’re going to have a full and complete investigation”, he said.
“This is a hindsight explanation”, Edwards said. “Making matters worse, while the people of Flint go without access to clean safe drinking water, and have even faced fines for not paying water bills on time, Nestlé continues to pump more than 200 gallons of clean MI water from the ground each minute to sell around the world”.
A WNBC spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Of the 10 petitions presented before the Monday’s meeting, nine were rejected on technicalities, mostly because of spelling errors.
A water main break caused a drop in the city’s water pressure, prompting city officials on Tuesday evening to notify residents that “bacterial contamination may have occurred”.
Interestingly, the law school had decided last week to cancel the panel, but people made a decision to protest anyway, calling for Snyder’s resignation due to the Flint water crisis, Caitlin Reedy and Riyah Basha report at The Michigan Daily. He compared charging officials with manslaughter over the water crisis to charging construction workers with the same crime for leaving open manholes unattended, resulting in death. He made no reference to bacteria.
The EPA did not notify the public for months after learning that state officials were not treating Flint’s water.
“This wasn’t [just] negligent; it was intentional”, said Trachelle Young, a former Flint city attorney who is now representing local families in several class-action lawsuits.
