First Zika Virus Confirmed in Oregon
The White House funding request followed a WHO emergency declaration last week that the Zika virus is now a global health threat, based on the suspicion that the virus may be to blame for the thousands of birth defects in Brazil in the past year. The CDC call and webinar will take place tomorrow afternoon and the Florida Department of Health will be sharing information with health care workers on how to participate.
Skinner said the average person who catches Zika is expected to recover, but it is a big concern for pregnant women because it is possibly tied to microcephaly and other poor outcomes in pregnancy.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says it will not be issuing travel restrictions related to the Zika virus. An infected person may carry the virus for about a month before it passes through the blood.
Smeaton told students the school’s Health and Wellness Center has been in touch with state officials and there is no risk to anyone on campus, the Brown & White said.
There have been a few confirmed cases within the USA of individuals who recently traveled to areas experiencing transmission of the virus. “The Aedes aegypti mosquito is not present in the United Kingdom and is unlikely to establish in the near future as the United Kingdom temperature is not consistently high enough for it to breed”, Public Health England said in a statement.
Hughes said he was unlikely to follow the United States Olympic Committee’s lead in hiring two infectious disease specialists to advise potential Olympians anxious about the Zika outbreak. That mosquito is limited to the deep southern US states, she said.
An adult woman tested positive for the virus, which is widespread in Central and South America, and the Caribbean and has been linked to birth defects.
Zika is usually spread by mosquitos, and it is rare for humans to infect other humans.
“The arguments for sharing data and the consequences of not doing so (have been)… thrown into stark relief by the Ebola and Zika outbreaks”, the agreement by an unprecedented number of signatories in the Americas, Japan, Europe and elsewhere said.
Although the government there has refused to provide details on where she had travelled, officials have stressed she was not infected locally. Zika can cause a rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis and fever. But what is alarming people in Brazil, where the disease is most prevalent in the north-east of the country, is a possible link between Zika infection and a foetal malformation known as microcephaly, a condition that causes brain damage and unusually small heads in babies.
