Twitter Lost Users Last Quarter. Welp
NEW YORK (AP) – Twitter‘s tweaking its timeline to emphasize certain tweets from people you follow, but don’t expect dramatic changes from the chronological feed you’re used to.
The algorithm was most likely built on a “while you were away” feature that Twitter introduced about a year ago to show people notable posts they missed while not using the service.
Twitter’s advertising efforts worked well in Q4 2015, but the company is having trouble retaining users – much less enticing new ones.
In its attempt to save the company and improve user growth, Twitter will try to solve the information overload problem. Excluding SMS, the company reported it had 305 million monthly active users down from 307 million in Q3.
The social media company reported Wednesday that it lost 2 million users in the last three months of 2015. Twitter claims to reach a total audience of 800 million users per month, including non-registered users who read tweets embedded on third-party websites. Twitter has been repeatedly punished for failing to grow its logged-in user base in a meaningful way. But even under him, the incremental updates to Twitter – Moments, changing the fave to a like button, and potentially lifting the character limit for tweets – hasn’t meaningfully moved the service.
“The “.” thing isn’t necessarily obvious for new users.
Revenues for the quarter surged to $710.5 million from $479.1 million previous year. When you open Twitter after some time away, highly ranked tweets will show up at the top of your timeline in reverse-chronological order. Shares were still trading down almost two percent an hour after the report. Strangely, TweetDeck and Twitter for Mac are not included in the scheme of things as of now. Twitter needs to find a way to re-ignite its user growth, which has now completely stalled.
Through a sample experience on a log-out screen and an algorithmic Timeline setup, Twitter is bending over backwards to cater to users who are confused by the service.
Despite the disappointing news for stockholders, Twitter did increase its ad business. – No brand can advertise with a promoted tweet in the top tweets section.
The company’s shares have more than halved in value since Dorsey, one of the founders, returned to Twitter in July.
According to Jahr, users will be able to go into Settings and turn it off and revert back to the traditional reverse chron timeline.
In contrast, users on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat are regularly interacting with people they care about.
