New Hampshire Recap: Big Wins and Even Bigger Losses
Inside her rally, Clinton’s supporters defiantly chanted, “I’m with her!” and roared with approval when the former secretary of state took the stage, joined by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea. But after saying his repeated lines Saturday were not stumbles but intention, Rubio admitted Tuesday night in New Hampshire that it was to blame.
Sanders walloped Clinton, beating her by 22 points, 60 to 38 percent.
As polls closed, her campaign manager Robby Mook blasted out a memo touting Clinton’s strength with Hispanics and black voters and arguing that a Democrat can not win the presidency without support from those constituencies.
The Washington Post: “Trump galvanized voters here with a visceral fixation on immigration and economic populism, affirming that even after last week’s setback in the Iowa caucuses, his candidacy has genuine appeal with the GOP base as well as with the independent voters who were part of his winning coalition”.
Donald Trump (left) and Bernie Sanders won the Republican and Democratic primaries Tuesday night in New Hampshire.
“I don’t think anyone is going to wrap this up in SC or Nevada”, he said.
The excellent campaign run so far by Bernie Sanders moves ever closer towards its greatest weakness: Sanders’ chances, or lack thereof, in the general election.
The parties will fight off Sanders and Trump eventually, although neither the consensus for Clinton on the Democratic side nor the consensus against Trump on the Republican side produced results in New Hampshire.
Additionally, fewer than half of the Democrats polled Tuesday believed Clinton to be honest and trustworthy – compared to almost 90 percent who believed Sanders possessed those qualities.
The New York businessman and reality television star has almost universal name recognition and gets so much media coverage that he doesn’t have to spend campaign cash like his rivals. He pointed to his largely positive approach, saying, “Light overcame the darkness”. Rubio, Kasich and Bush will carry on to SC. Marco Rubio vied for third place along with Cruz, ensuring all would press on to the next contest – the February 20 SC primary. But a mood of pessimism does not appear to be a distinguishing feature of Trump voters. Six of them have endorsed Clinton, while two aren’t committed to either candidate.
“People have every right to be angry but they’re also hungry, they’re hungry for solutions”, Clinton, 68, said after congratulating the 74-year-old Sanders. “As the process shifts to South Carolina, Nevada, Florida, and the Southern primaries, she will do better because of her strong support among African American voters”, Brookings Institution’s senior fellow Darrell West told Xinhua, referring to the next primary contests.
Sanders, a Vermont senator and self-proclaimed democratic socialist, raised $5 million-plus in less than a day after his New Hampshire triumph. And unlike Republicans, Democrats give hundreds of party insiders a vote at the national convention to cast as they choose. The endorsements a candidate racks up in the so-called “invisible primary” have in the past been a strong indicator of who will eventually win the nomination, political scientists have found.
Clearly unafraid of John Kasich, Rubio called the OH governor “an impressive guy” whom he likes.
New Hampshire most likely marks the end of the road for Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina.
