Sandra Bland’s mother to campaign for Hillary Clinton
Sanders apparently asked for the meeting, as he looks to win over more African American voters ahead of the primary in SC, where Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is leading in polls. Sanders will have big problems in SC if he doesn’t do better among voters who like Obama.
Clinton also carries into the fight against Sanders not only the pressure of proving she has a renewed rational for her second White House bid, but the optics of doing it as the wife of a man often referred to as America’s “first black president”.
Sanders is battling Hillary Clinton for the nomination and the support of black voters across the country.
When he attended a #BlackLivesMatter gathering in September, attendees expressed concern that because he represents Vermont, an overwhelmingly white state, he may not be in touch with black voters, according to the Huffington Post.
Sharpton praised Sanders for coming to Harlem the day after his victory in New Hampshire, explaining that it sends a “signal” of the community’s importance.
But Clinton, who will meet with Sharpton on Tuesday, still has to earn the African-American vote, he said on MSNBC’s “MTP Daily”, reports Politico. The Clinton campaign, trying to pivot after Tuesday’s takedown in New Hampshire, held a Wednesday afternoon call with reporters in which three black surrogates offered an unvarnished assessment of Sanders and his record.
“I asked him very bluntly about Flint, I asked him very bluntly about affirmative action, I’ve asked him very bluntly about issues of police brutality and police misconduct, things that I want to hear”, Sharpton said.
Jealous agreed, saying Sanders is the only candidate with a racial justice platform who is polling well against potential Republican challengers.
“Hillary has been hit with everything for years, we know what we are getting with her. Now Bernie will get his turn, and they won’t be kind to him”, Matz said.
Bernie met Al at Sylvia’s Wednesday but an endorsement wasn’t on the menu. “He’s talking about the issues that I’m concerned about”. When former President Bill Clinton had his office in Harlem, he was a customer. “It’s going to resonate with the African-American community”.
“I’m certain that the next candidate to come our way – her first name will start with an H and her last name will start with a C”, she added.
