‘Terrible’ Turf Had Panthers OT Michael Oher Sliding Around During Super Bowl
After preparing the playing surface for all 50 Super Bowls, Toma came out Wednesday to defend the facility’s sod blend of hybrid bermuda and rye.
But it’s obvious that there were times it affected the quality of play.
But Rivera is gracious like that, and saying that his team didn’t have any problems with the turf isn’t backed up by the image of Oher gliding gracefully backward like Dorothy Hamill. According to ProFootballTalk’s Darin Gantt, the always magnanimous Ron Rivera called it “outstanding”, while the less-diplomatic Aqib Talib called it “terrible”. We gave the players the best playing field, a safe playing field.
“Sometimes these players are hard-headed”, Toma said. As far as I’m concerned, for me to be able to blame the field is kind of a cop out. The truth of the matter is we both played on the surface. But there’s getting beat by a defender, in this case Super Bowl MVP Von Miller, and then there’s this.
And in August 2015, the team had to move a training camp practice from the stadium, where 20,000 fans were to attend, to a closed practice field because – you guessed it – the turf was falling apart.
“I know there’s a lot of controversy, but the field played excellent”.
No this is not a Madden glitch – Oher just slid a sold five yards sideways towards Newton.
Players on both the Panthers and Broncos changed cleats during the game after complaining of footing issues, CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson reported during the broadcast.
