The cool new foray into artificial intelligence is part of Microsoft’s recent thrust into “machine-learning research” through “Project Oxford”.
Microsoft previously teamed up its facial recognition and artificial intelligence teams to figure out how old people are (with varying results). It’s also a great add for Microsoft’s new Fetch mobile app which lets you use your smartphone camera to take pictures of dogs and then tells you what kind of dog it is.
The breed-recognition technology, which was first developed two years ago, has been turned into an app to show that object recognition could be “extraordinary, fun and surprising”.
The Microsoft app, released on Thursday and now only available in iTunes and online, scans any image and tells you what dog the image looks like.
Fetch is the latest app to emerge from The Garage, Redmond’s program focused on experimentation and grassroots projects. As Motherboard points out, it’s possible to use to use Fetch! to determine the breed of a dogs that are even cleverly disguised.
