Ben Stiller credits Anna Wintour for making ‘Zoolander 2’ happen
Ahead of the New York City premiere for Zoolander 2, a few famous faces descended to the red carpet for an impromptu fashion show.
Sorry Sting, sorry Kiefer Sutherland you are not amusing.
“It’s very easy to make a sequel to, like, ‘Transformers, ‘” Stiller said. While some critics loved it, Roger Ebert only gave it one star and ripped it for its plot involving the assassination of the Malaysian president, saying that it was just a prime example of why the Muslim world hates the US.
Of course, the emptiness and stupidity of the modeling world is the whole point, but not enough to excuse the rickety laziness of “Zoolander 2”, which amounts to a parade of celebrity cameos masquerading as a movie.
We’re glad to see their camera-ready poses spanned three generations.
Except, of course, it hasn’t.
Good guys and bad guys both have their reasons for wanting Derek and Hansel to come out of retirement.
The 20-year-old fashion model stunned while kicking off the purple carpet in a patriotic red, white and blue, off-the-shoulder gown that hugged her curves. But now, the men are suddenly summoned to Rome to walk in a fashion show hosted by mega-tycoon Alexanya Atoz (Kristen Wiig, unrecognizable, channeling Donatella Versace and murdering vowels each time she opens her inflated lips).
Derek is on a quest to get back his son, whom the authorities had taken away as a toddler because of Derek’s horrific parental skills.
Branded “really, really ridiculously bad” and “horribly offensive” by the Daily Beast, one critic homed in on the arguably insensitive trans jokes in reference to Benedict Cumberbatch’s cameo. However, he had a hard time selling the role when he pitched the scene to her. “I said, ‘Hey, there’s this scene where Owen Wilson has this relationship with a group of people in the movie, ‘” he explained.
Penelope Cruz joins Ben Stiller for the craziness that is Zoolander 2.
Matilda was a serious journalist, indifferent to fashion and it always felt like she could at any point break the fourth wall with an eye roll at Derek and Hansel’s idiocy. Fifteen years… and numerous scripts later, Stiller has brought Zoolander back… but the result is not almost as impressive.
