Watch Bernie Sanders React When Stephen Colbert Compares Him to Donald Trump
The day after Bernie Sanders won big in New Hampshire, America’s best-known curmudgeonly socialist took over late-night with appearances on The Late Show and The Tonight Show (sort of). Sanders explained his appeal with the youths, and also why he was not like Donald Trump. Bernie Sanders drank beer and ate boiled peanuts in honor of SC during an interview with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show”.
“They’re going to fight you tooth and nail”, Colbert said.
Colbert also asked about photographs that went viral previous year showing Sanders not only flying in economy class, but taking the middle seat. “By definition, young people are idealistic”, he said.
When Colbert actually brought out his guest, they ran through the usual Sanders platform, with Colbert invoking his guest from a night previous, Bill O’Reilly, and the Fox News host’s arguments about the impossibility of a Sanders Presidency.
Sanders responded, “I certainly hope not”.
Warning against the risks of revolution, Colbert quoted John F. Kennedy: “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable”. “They’re in many cases people who are working longer hoours for lower wages and they’re people anxious about what’s going to happen to their kids”.
When it came to Sanders, Colbert picked up on a gaffe made by MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, who on primary night mangled the Democratic candidate’s name as “Bernie Sandwiches”.
“Voting for me is a twofer”. “But I think what people are saying is enough is enough. My view is, yes, people have a right to be angry… but what we need to be is rational in figuring out how we address the problem and not simply scapegoating minorities”. He said there is the public demand for it and that most Americans believe that healthcare is a universal right, but the question is if people are willing to stand up to the companies that control politicians and policy.
