Police were called to the Nazareth Restaurant on the state capitol’s northeast side at about 6 p.m. EST, according to the Columbus Dispatch newspaper.
He left, but returned a short time later with a machete and began attacking customers.
Four people in the restaurant were injured in the attack, Weiner said. And another TV station is reporting that four people were rushed to the hospital. “Another officer in a cruiser fired a couple shots at him and put him down”. Authorities say the man fled the scene and was later fatally shot by police.
Officers said that as they approached the suspect, he came out of the vehicle with a machete in one hand and a knife in the other.
The man then fled the scene, but police say officers caught up to him and fatally shot him.
The person had surgery and has been downgraded to stable condition, Columbus Police said. “Then he just started down the row hitting everybody; people were bleeding”, Karen Bass, a restaurant patron, told My Fox 28 Columbus. The FBI is assisting police in investigating the man’s recent past and possible motives.
Police haven’t released their names or identified the man who was killed.
Zackas arrived at the scene after the mayhem, and said she was shocked at the rampage because the owner has a “great reputation” and “everybody leaves here with a smile”.
Weiner said the suspect was in the restaurant, speaking with an employee, less than an hour before the attack.
