Donald Trump skewered in Funny or Die film
Comedy website amusing or Die today released an almost-feature-length movie about Donald Trump’s life. The new release has an A-list cast and has been kept super secret for months.
Oscar-winner Howard directed Depp as the eccentric real-estate mogul at the peak of his business career, brokering deals and breaking hearts.
The release was planned to coincide with the New Hampshire primary, which Trump won on Tuesday.
Purporting itself as a “VHS copy”, the ambitious, 50-minute project is so very ’80s, complete with a grainy aesthetic and an original theme song from Kenny Loggins.
The movie also stars The Da Vinci Code director Ron Howard, Alfred Molina (Spider-Man’s Dr Octopus) and Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future’s time-travelling “Doc”). Meant to air originally in the 1980s as a one hour television special, Trump supposedly buried the film in anger after being preempted by Monday night football. Depp pulls off an impressive Trump impression, aside from the questionable prosthetic mask, which is actually pretty good considering the movie was filmed over the course of just four days.
The film was directed by Drunk History co-creator Jeremy Konner, with a script written by former editor of The Onion Joe Randazzo. “It was gorgeous, it was huge, and it was easily the classiest thing ever built by a Muslim”. So I vowed that day to buy my own Taj Mahal.
Depp is nearly unrecognizable in thick makeup and Trump-esque blonde wig – but his over-the-top outbursts, offensive comments and outsized confidence are spot on.
“We had a few people sign nondisclosures, but mostly we just begged people not to say anything”, amusing or Die editor-in-chief Owen Burke said. “But Johnny brought, like, a whole team of professionals to help him get into character”.
