Driver Killed By Manhole Cover On I-93
Police didn’t confirm the victim’s name Friday, but Milton Public School district identified her as Caitlin Clavette, an art teacher at Glover Elementary School in the Boston suburb.
It’s unclear what caused the manhole cover to become dislodged. State Police and other agencies are continuing to investigate the incident.
The Milton Public School system confirmed Friday that a woman killed by a flying manhole cover on Interstate 93 is an elementary school art teacher in Milton.
Baker said highway department inspectors are going out with welders and doing physical inspections of every manhole cover and grate to make sure none are loose.
The cover – a heavy, thick chunk of steel – came to rest upside-down about 75 yards from the manhole.
Baker says it’s too early to speculate on how it happened.
Pieces of Clavette’s vehicle could be seen littering the left lane this morning, from the tunnel’s exit to the spot a couple hundred yards away where her auto crashed and stopped at approximately 7:50 a.m.
Manhole covers like the one in Friday’s accident weigh in excess of 200 pounds. There was no indication the cover had been removed recently, he said.
“My initial reaction was what an incredible tragedy for that woman and her family and what an incredibly random tragedy”, Baker said. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
