Cinemax comes to cord-cutters via Sling TV for $10 per month
The addition is noteworthy as it’s the first time ever that viewers have access to the HBO-owned network outside of a traditional cable or satellite subscription.
Today, Cinemax is taking its first step outside the pay-TV ecosystem by becoming a $10-a-month add-on for Sling TV. There were also a number of add-on packages for such things as extra sports and news channels.
To get Cinemax, you’ll still need a basic Sling TV subscription, which costs $20 per month and includes more than 20 cable channels such as ESPN, CNN, TBS, AMC, and the Food Network.
Starz is reportedly working on a standalone streaming service of its own. Banshee returns for its fourth and final season April 1, which gives you plenty of time to catch up on seasons one through three in Sling TV’s on-demand library.
The bundling of Cinemax with Sling TV may be a response to what rivals Showtime and Starz have been doing. Available to subscribers of “Best of Live TV” or one of Sling International’s base packages, Cinemax is now available across all Sling TV-supported devices.
HBO’s move to offer a version of its service aimed cord cutters has inspired other premium cable TV networks to do the same, including, most recently Showtime which debuted its standalone streaming service last summer, and later brought it to Hulu.
