Nashville puts on good show for NHL All-Star weekend
“#NHLAllStar”, speaking both to Scott’s offensive output and Bergeron’s inability to stop playing defense, even in an All-Star Game. The fans won, and the league invited Scott and his family to festivities in Nashville.
Each player on the Pacific team will pocket close to $91,000 – which works out to about 15 percent of Scott’s base National Hockey League salary this season.
Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr was the feel-good story heading into the tournament, the grizzled veteran captain of the Atlantic Division team. Scott was elected as captain of the Pacific Division while with the Arizona Coyotes. “So when someone from the National Hockey League calls me and says, ‘Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?’…”
Scott did beat Kane in one area: He scored two goals to the one from the NHL’s scoring leader and was named tournament MVP.
“You can’t put it into words”, Scott said. “It’s insane. You can’t make that stuff up”.
And although the National Hockey League didn’t include him in its three nominees to vote for game MVP on Twitter, the social media site was flooded with write-in votes for him.
This year’s viewership peaked in the 6:30-6:45 p.m. ET quarter hour, as 1.89 million viewers watched AHL enforcer John Scott score a pair of goals in the Pacific Division’s 9-6 win against the Central Division.
In the semifinal win, Scott humorously knocked down former Chicago teammate Patrick Kane and then dropped the gloves in a mock fight against the skilled Blackhawks star after Kane answered with a goal. The fans get credit for voting in John Scott, because without Scott this game would probably have been another flop. What it meant to hear the sold-out crowd chant her husband’s name in a let-the-people-be-heard campaign for the MVP award throughout the final game, what it meant for him to skate to center ice and accept the $1 million check for the winning team, what it meant for him to win the 2016 Honda Pilot awarded to the MVP and what it meant to see his All-Star teammates, beaming with pride, swoop in to raise him up on their shoulders as he did an on-ice interview with NBCSN. “Yeah, nerve wracking, especially (since) Burnzie is such a spaz”. You could tell the three of them were happy to be reunited and looked to be having an absolute blast. This time, the All-Stars combined for 116 shots and 23 goals. Scott was named most valuable player.
Montreal’s P.K. Subban, who impersonated Jagr in Saturday’s skills competition, gave the Atlantic its first and final lead with 4:38 left. The winners of the first two games advanced to a third-period championship.
“I broke a better sweat than a year ago for sure”, Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux said. He allowed just 1 goal in 10 minutes of the championship game. He pumped up his team with his leadership and that, ultimately, is what won the game for the Pacific team. That was quite the story and quite the game and just have fun with it, ‘ ” Scott reported. As for Scott’s hockey career, he hopes something good will come from his performance Sunday and he can get back into the NHL at some point this season, if not with the Canadiens, then with some other team.
