Lost Dr. Seuss Book To Be Published On Tuesday
A brother and sister, the same duo featured in “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” visit a pet store to find a pet. Currently, the sales of the new book has done better than expected with over a million copies sold in the opening days.
That – more than paying homage, more than fleshing out the historical record – is what’ I’d guess is behind the publication of “new” books by two of America’s most beloved authors.
Goldsmith, vice president and associate publishing director for Random House/Golden Books Young Readers, was nervous about turning the manuscript into a book.
According to CNN, Geisel’s widow, Audrey Geisel, found the manuscript and illustrations shortly after her husband died in 1991.
Goldsmith says the book “measures up to numerous books that he’s written” and is “a good addition to his overall work”.
When Geisel showed up at Random House’s New York offices, she recalls, it would be with an essentially finished manuscript, “black-and-white line drawings with text indications and colour directions”. The drawings and illustrations they found holds enough material for three complete books. In an eight-page afterword, the publisher makes a point of explaining, among other things, that families should adopt rather than buying dogs and cats from stores.
Learning how to decide is a wonderful skill, an important one that is not spoken about much. There are all different kinds of pets, even some made up ones.
Goldsmith has confirmed that “What Pet Should I Get?” was not the only book found in the long lost box. When I heard, I involuntary did a little happy dance. “He was famous for working on multiple projects at once, especially in the golden years”. The tale captures a classic childhood dilemma, and uses it to illuminate a life lesson: that it is hard to make up your mind, but sometimes you just have to do it!
The two siblings arrive at the shop after getting the okay from Dad: Dad said we could have one./Dad said he would pay./I went to the Pet Shop./I went there with Kay.
