Call of Duty 2015 confirmed, in development at Infinity Ward
Activision officially announces that a new Call of Duty game will be released in the fourth quarter of 2016 and will be developed by Modern Warfare creators, Infinity Ward. During that period, Sledgehammer Games broke off into the near-future with Advanced Warfare, before Treyarch catapulted the franchise all the way into 2065 with the release of last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III. After the comparatively lackluster “Ghosts”, Activision split its “Call of Duty” duties across three studios to wring the most creativity out of its stable of development houses.
Black Ops 3 was the biggest entertainment launch of 2015, bettering even the opening weekend of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, said Activision president and CFO Eric Hirshberg.
Infinity Ward’s second shot on the “Call of Duty” project and its plans to make it more interesting remains to be seen. According to Attack of the Fan Boy, Infinity Ward took to Twitter the announcement saying, “COD 2016”. It was also the number one game in North America for the seventh year running. Both Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty are (or, in Assassin’s Creed case, were) yearly franchises with lavish, blockbuster production values (or known as triple-A in the industry).
Infinity Ward has been responsible for the original Call of Duty and most of its sequels, including Modern Warfare 1 & 2, and Ghosts. The event has been advertised for the PS4, but it’s not unreasonable to assume that at least the Xbox One and PC will be included too- PS3 and Xbox 360 players, on the other hand, are probably left out in the cold.
