Life threatening cold weather this weekend!
The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for much of the state from 4 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday. Wind chills could dip as low as -30.
The National Weather Service said a deep Polar low has settled across the eastern United States – conditions that will likely remain in place until early next week. Wind chills between 5 and 5 below. Another batch of very cold arctic air will come through late Friday night into Saturday morning setting the stage for unsafe wind chills and snow!
Saturday: Snow showers, mainly before 1 pm. It is predicted to be mostly cloudy with a high around 29.
The cold air mass, originating at the North Pole, will slide south, plunging Saturday night’s low to about 7 degrees. Overnight, temperatures will fall in to the lower 20’s overnight. The winds will increase to close to 20 miles per hour, and that will mean frigid wind chills for Saturday morning.
Another strong system is expected to move in on Sunday, according to the NWS, with widespread accumulating snow a possibility. Otherwise, we expect a mix of clouds and sunshine, a gusty northwesterly wind, and highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s. “A potentially more significant storm looms for early next week”. Early next week, temperatures should return to normal at about 40 degrees. Temperatures are expected to thaw by Monday.
This would be the coldest temperature recorded at TF Green since February of a year ago (2015).
Bring pets indoors. If that’s not possible, make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm and that they can get to unfrozen water.
Space heaters should sit on a level, hard surface, and anything flammable should be kept at least three feet away.
“Never use a stove or oven to heat your home or use an open flame to melt frozen pipes”.
